Health & Safety Inspectors and Employment Standards Officers in the Ministry of Labours (MOL) Western Region will be visiting golf courses in 2018/19 with a focus on administrative requirements as well as physical hazards. The MOL has been in contact recently to ask us to update our membership with some key messages for next season.
Health & Safety – Physical Hazards Focus
There have been serious worker injuries where equipment has been cutting / operating on surfaces exceeding the manufacturers maximum recommended slope ratings. A key hazard focus will be equipment roll-over. Employers need to assess the risks associated with the course surfaces/layout and the type of equipment being used in all areas of the course vs the manufacturers max slope rating in order to ensure workers are not exposed to this hazard.

The Employment Standards Act sets out the minimum requirements for the employee/employer relationship in the province of Ontario, regarding such entitlements as minimum wage, public holiday, termination, etc. The recent passing of Bill 148, Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017 has made many changes to these minimum standards/entitlements. In addition, there is a new Employment Standards poster version 7.0 that must be posted, as of January 1, 2018, in the workplace and provided individually to employees. Employment Standards Poster
